Velcro Show
With societal change at an all-time peak, the summer of 2020 is a breeding ground for new trends. One intriguing style gaining traction in the mainstream market is Velcro sandals.
The Spring 2018 Ready to Wear collection by Rick Owens famously featured industrial style, solid and strappy sandals. These brutalist bottoms blending with and brewing alongside the Ugly Dad shoe phenomenon, set the groundwork for today’s velcro trend. While society wasn’t quite ready to adopt this style back then, the increased priority of comfortable clothing and home living during the pandemic has greatly accelerated this fad. While the Teva brand has owned the hiking and trekking shoe space for decades, designers like Prada are now elevating this look with platforms, embellishments and ultra-cool monochrome colors. Prada, in particular, has been a major proponent for this fad, offering patterned styles like their Cloudbust Thunder Sandals and their Platform Jacquard Sport Sandal. Whether raw and rugged or dainty and delicate, designers like Ganni, Balenciaga, Chanel, Loeffler Randall, Jeffrey Campbell, Vince, Puma and Ugg are trailblazing ahead with this trend.
While Velcro may seem like a peculiar choice for anyone who isn’t very old or very young, it actually fits just right for Gen Z and Millennials who are hanging out on at home. Sporty and stylish, these slip-on, Velcro sandals ease the transition of leaving the house for rare outings to the grocery store and excursions to the park. Laid-back yet fashion forward, Velcro sandals are just the utilitarian comfort what we need to get us through the summer in style.
